I'm very keen of fantasy literature. I don't know exactly when it began and why it is so attractive to me. And in this gender, the theme that most enchants me is the one about kings, queen, knights, battles... - mainly from the British/Celtic/Saxan (etc.) culture.
I've already been asked the reasons of such a taste, for which I don't know the answer.
The first book I remember I read about this subject was O Rei Arthur e os Cavaleiros da Távola Redonda (King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, in English). I think I was 11 years old. It was an adapted text telling the story (or, at least, a version) of how Arthur became king and how his loyal party was formed. By that time, I didn't like the reading, so I didn't finish the book.
When I was 15, I was presented The Mists of Avalon. First, I watched the movie - which I didn't (and I still don't) enjoy. But some years later, I read the books. And that's when my passion was consolidated!
Maybe I had already been teased for the theme by The Lord of the Ring movies. The story, the characters, the special effects... it all amazed me. Nevertheless, there are something in The Mists of Avalon that fiercely transports me to another place, time, reality.
So, although I watched The Lord of the Ring before reading The Mists of Avalon, I consider the latter as the ground zero of my passion.
P.S.: A doubt came to my mind, while I was creating this post: are King Arthur stories fantasy or historic literature? Or are they a mix of both?
